Cultivating excellence in life and life's assignment

“Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm” ~ Daniel 6:3.

Introduction

God never called His children to a life of mediocrity. Rather, He calls us to reflect His nature by pursuing excellence in every area of life and in every assignment He entrusts to us.

Excellence is more than exceptional performance; it is the disciplined commitment to honour God by giving Him our very best in every thing through the enabling power of the Holy Spirit. It is excellence of character before it becomes excellence of achievement.

Our God is the Excellent God. The Psalmist declared, “O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!” (Psalm 8:1). Everything He does reflects beauty, wisdom, order, and perfection. At creation, God looked upon His works and declared them “very good” (Genesis 1:31).

Our Lord Jesus Christ also exemplified excellence throughout His earthly ministry. His words carried authority, His compassion restored the broken, and His miracles revealed divine power. His walk was a pattern of due order and His life perfectly reflected the Father’s majestic excellence.

Daniel stands as one of Scripture’s greatest examples of excellence. Though surrounded by political intrigue and pagan culture, he consistently distinguished himself because “an excellent spirit was in him.” His greatness was not merely intellectual or administrative; it flowed from his unwavering devotion to God, integrity, wisdom, diligence, and obedience.

Every believer is called to cultivate such a spirit. As Colossians 3:23 exhorts, “Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men”.

Excellence Begins with Understanding Your Divine Assignment

Before we can pursue excellence, we must understand why God placed us on earth. Beyond our general calling as children of God, every believer has a unique kingdom assignment prepared by God before birth.

Life is not an accident; it is an assignment. The Lord told Jeremiah: “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee… and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5). Likewise, your life was designed with divine intentionality. 

Your assignment is your God-ordained contribution to His eternal purpose. Your career, family, ministry, profession, influence, and even your geographical location may all serve as platforms for fulfilling that assignment.

Discovering God’s purpose requires prayer, honest self-examination, and total surrendering to His will. That’s why it is often said, “He who looks outside dreams; he who looks inside awakens”.

To neglect your assignment is to become a liability where God intended you to be an asset. Conversely, walking in your divine purpose attracts God’s favour, provision, and direction. Where God guides, He also provides.

Cultivating an Excellent Spirit

An excellent spirit is not inherited overnight; it is cultivated through intentional growth, discipline, and dependence upon God.

1. Seek God’s Will Above Personal Ambition

Excellence begins with complete surrender. Thus, the greatest prayer a believer can pray is, “Not my will, but thine, be done” (Luke 22:42). God never finances personal ambition, but He always supplies grace for His divine purpose.

Meanwhile, it is prayer that keeps us aligned with heaven’s agenda and enables us to discover both our gifts and our calling.

2. Commit Yourself to the Heavenly Vision

Vision fuels excellence. The clearer your understanding of God’s purpose, the greater your passion to pursue it. Paul testified, “I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision” (Acts 26:19).

Commitment involves continual learning, careful preparation, wise planning, diligent research, and persistent faith. Excellence flourishes where vision remains clear and unwavering.

3. Pay the Price for Excellence

There are no shortcuts to genuine excellence. Great achievements are rarely accidental; they are the fruit of daily faithfulness to the ideals of the Excellent God.

Daniel’s influence was built upon years of disciplined prayer, integrity, faithful service, and consistent obedience. Likewise, believers who desire lasting impact must cultivate holy habits that strengthen character and deepen fellowship with God.

4. Reject Mediocrity

One of the greatest enemies of excellence is complacency. Slothfulness, carelessness, poor preparation, fear, and negative attitude diminish both personal effectiveness and kingdom impact. 

Scripture rebukes offering God defective sacrifices (Malachi 1:8), reminding us that the God of excellence deserves our very best. Believers should never become satisfied with mere “good enough” when God has called them to excellence.

5. Cultivate Spiritual Depth

Every task deserves excellence because every task can become an act of worship. However, public excellence always grows out of private devotion. 

Before Daniel excelled in Babylon’s palace, he excelled in God’s presence. His wisdom, courage, and discernment flowed from an intimate relationship with the Lord.

The Holy Spirit remains the ultimate Source of wisdom, understanding, creativity, and excellence. As we walk with God through prayer, obedience, worship, and meditation upon His Word, He progressively shapes Christlike character and excellence within us.

6. Pursue Continuous Improvement

Excellence never stands still. Those who stop learning eventually stop growing. The wise continually seek knowledge, develop new skills, and remain teachable. Proverbs declares, “Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser” (Proverbs 9:9).

Every day should become an opportunity to improve upon yesterday. Constant growth distinguishes excellence from mediocrity.

7. Determine to Finish Well

Many begin enthusiastically; comparatively few finish faithfully. The Apostle Paul could confidently declare, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7).

Even our Lord Jesus Christ Himself demonstrated unwavering determination to accomplish His mission on earth, for “he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem” (Luke 9:51). He was fully committed to accomplishing the Father’s will. Likewise, believers must resolve to complete their God-given assignments with courage, perseverance, and faithfulness.

Our assignment remains incomplete if it does not ultimately advance God’s kingdom and bring people to Christ. Therefore, we must fully determine to live for His glory, proclaim His Gospel, serve His people, and leave an eternal legacy.

Excellence Is a Daily Choice

Many believe excellence is reserved for the exceptionally gifted. Scripture teaches otherwise. Your background, upbringing, or present limitations do not determine your future. God’s grace is able to elevate anyone who faithfully develops what has been entrusted to them.

While God distributes different gifts to different people, excellence develops through faithful stewardship of those gifts. It is less about natural ability than about spiritual responsibility.

Excellence begins with today’s decisions. Small acts of faithfulness become tomorrow’s great testimonies. As Jesus taught, “He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much” (Luke 16:10).

Conclusion

Developing excellence in life and life’s assignment is a lifelong journey of continual growth, disciplined stewardship, and wholehearted devotion to Christ. It requires humility, diligence, perseverance, teachability, and unwavering obedience to God’s will.

Beloved, refuse to settle for mediocrity. Continue learning, improving, praying, and growing. Whatever God has committed into your hands, perform it wholeheartedly, remembering that you ultimately serve the Lord and not men.

The greatest tragedy in life is not failure, but failing to become all God created you to be. Therefore, remain focused upon Christ. Let your daily habits align with your divine assignment. Pursue excellence with unwavering determination, and finish the race with joy.

As you cultivate an excellent spirit like Daniel, may the Lord distinguish you among your contemporaries. May He enlarge your influence, increase your usefulness, open doors no one can shut, and establish the work of your hands.
