Demolishing invisible barriers

“Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in. And the LORD said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine hand Jericho…” — Joshua 6:1–2.
“So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets… and the wall fell down flat…” — Joshua 6:20
Introduction
One of the painful realities of life is that not every obstacle to progress and victory is visible. Some barriers can be seen with the natural eye, while others operate behind the scenes, silently resisting progress, delaying breakthroughs, and opposing divine purpose.
Scripture reveals that there are spiritual forces that oppose God’s plans for His people. Paul reminds us: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers…” (Ephesians 6:12). These invisible barriers often manifest as unexplained delays, repeated disappointments, persistent frustrations, closed doors, family patterns, spiritual oppression, and cycles of stagnation. Yet no barrier is stronger than the power of God.
The good news is that Jesus Christ has already secured our victory through His death and resurrection. Therefore, believers do not fight for victory; we fight from a position of victory (Colossians 2:15; Romans 8:37). Nevertheless, every child of God must learn how to identify and demolish the invisible barriers standing between them and their God-ordained inheritance. The story of Jericho provides timeless lessons for every believer seeking to advance into divine destiny.
Understanding Invisible Barriers
Jericho was the first major obstacle standing between Israel and the Promised Land. The city was heavily fortified and completely shut up because of the children of Israel (Joshua 6:1). Behind the physical walls was a spiritual resistance designed to hinder God’s covenant people from possessing their inheritance. Likewise, believers today encounter spiritual equivalents of Jericho. Even the Apostle Paul said: “We would have come unto you… but Satan hindered us” (1 Thessalonians 2:18).
Many struggles in life have roots beyond the natural realm. What appears to be merely financial, emotional, relational, or professional may sometimes involve spiritual opposition. This is why spiritual discernment is essential.
Keys to Demolishing Invisible Barriers
1. Prepare Your Heart Before the Battle
Before Israel confronted Jericho, God prepared His people. Joshua restored the covenant practices of circumcision and the Passover (Joshua 5:2–11). These acts represented consecration, covenant renewal, and spiritual alignment with God. Victory often begins long before the battle itself. God works first on the heart before He works on the circumstance.
David asked: “Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD?… He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart” (Psalm 24:3–4). Many barriers remain standing because hearts remain unyielded. Before God changes our situation, He often changes us. A consecrated life attracts divine intervention.
2. Develop Spiritual Sensitivity
Israel learned that victory belongs to those who understand spiritual realities. Spiritual sensitivity enables us to discern God’s strategy and recognize the enemy’s devices. God is a Spirit (John 4:24), and much of life’s warfare takes place in the unseen realm. Many people struggle because they interpret spiritual problems through purely natural lenses. They fight symptoms while ignoring causes.
Paul prayed that believers would be filled with spiritual wisdom and understanding (Colossians 1:9). The more spiritually minded a believer becomes, the greater his capacity to overcome invisible resistance.
3. Exercise Faith in God’s Word
The walls of Jericho did not fall because Israel possessed superior military strength. They fell because the people believed God’s Word: “By faith the walls of Jericho fell down” (Hebrews 11:30). From a human perspective, God’s instructions appeared unusual. Yet faith obeys even when it does not fully understand. Faith refuses to focus on the size of the barrier; it focuses on the greatness of God.
Every significant advancement in God’s Kingdom requires faith. Faith sees beyond present limitations and embraces God’s promises as settled realities. What God says is more important than what circumstances suggest.
4. Walk According to Divine Pattern
God gave Israel a specific strategy: march around the city, remain silent, and shout at the appointed time (Joshua 6:3–5). The power was not in the march itself but in obedient compliance with God’s instruction. Throughout Scripture, divine results follow divine order. Noah built according to God’s pattern. Moses constructed the Tabernacle according to God’s pattern. Joshua conquered Jericho according to God’s pattern.
Today, many believers desire the fulfillment of God’s promises while ignoring God’s instructions. Obedience remains one of the greatest weapons in spiritual warfare. When God speaks, our responsibility is not to debate but to obey. The “walls of Jericho” still fall today when God’s people walk according to divine instruction. God’s power follows God’s pattern, and obedience remains a pathway to breakthrough, victory, and the fulfilment of divine purpose.
5. Engage the Power of Prayer and Prophetic Declaration
Invisible barriers are not dismantled by human reasoning alone. They often require the force of fervent prayer and the authority of God’s spoken Word. Prayer invites divine intervention into human situations and releases heavenly resources against satanic resistance. Jesus taught that “men ought always to pray …” (Luke 18:1).
When Peter was imprisoned behind seemingly impossible barriers, the Church prayed earnestly, and God sent an angel to open the prison doors (Acts 12:5–11). The chains that could not be broken by force, prayer shattered. Prayer weakens satanic resistance, exposes hidden works of darkness, and creates pathways for divine breakthrough. Believers must engage in effectual, fervent prayer (James 5:16).
Alongside prayer is the power of prophetic declaration. God’s pattern from the beginning was to speak before seeing results. In Genesis 1, God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. The walls of Jericho fell after a prophetic shout of faith and obedience (Joshua 6:20). The shout was not mere noise; it was a declaration of confidence in God’s promise. Jesus taught: “Whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed…” (Mark 11:23).
Believers must learn to speak God’s Word over their lives, families, ministries, businesses, and destinies. Refuse to echo fear, defeat, and limitation. Declare what God has spoken. Speak to the mountains. Speak to the closed gates. Speak to the impossible situations. God’s Word in your mouth is a weapon of victory. As Job declared: “Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee” (Job 22:28).
Prayer invites God’s power; prophetic declaration releases faith. When both are combined with obedience and covenant alignment, invisible barriers cannot stand for long.
Conclusion
Invisible barriers are real, but they are not invincible. Every wall erected by the enemy can be demolished through consecration, spiritual sensitivity, faith, obedience, prayer, and prophetic declaration. The God who brought down Jericho remains the same today. What He did for Israel, He is still able to do for His covenant people. Whatever barrier stands before you—whether delay, stagnation, fear, limitation, opposition, or spiritual resistance—shall not prevail against God’s purpose for your life.
Therefore, prepare your heart. Strengthen your spirituality. Walk by faith. Pray fervently. Declare God’s promises boldly. Follow divine instructions, and march forward in obedience.
Friends, always remember: every new level has a Jericho, but every Jericho has a God-ordained strategy for its collapse. No wall can stand indefinitely before a people whose God is the Lord.
In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, every invisible barrier opposing your advancement shall fall flat. Every gate of resistance shall open. Every force of delay shall give way. Your path shall open, your destiny shall advance, and you shall enter fully into your God-ordained inheritance. You will not be denied. You will not be defeated. You will not miss your destiny, in Jesus’ precious Name. Amen. Happy Sunday!
