Living in the overflow experience

“Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life…” — Psalm 23:5–6.

“He opened the rock, and the waters gushed out; they ran in the dry places like a river” — Psalm 105:41.

Introduction

Our God is the God of abundance. His resources are inexhaustible, His goodness never fails, and His grace is ever bountiful. The deeper we grow in the knowledge of His Word, the stronger our faith becomes, and the more we experience the richness of His divine provision.

Jesus declared, “I am come that they might have life …… more abundantly” (John 10:10). He came not merely to save us from sin but to bring us into the fullness of life—a life overflowing with His grace, peace, joy, and all-sufficiency.

Our God never operates from scarcity. Sadly, many believers live far below their covenant privileges. Some struggle beneath the weight of lack, while others settle for spiritual survival instead of abundant living. The problem is never a shortage of divine resources but often our failure to understand and appropriate God’s promises by faith.

The Lord desires that you “prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth” (3 John 2). As our minds are renewed by His Word, our faith rises to embrace His provision, and we begin to experience His overflowing blessings.

Understanding the Overflow Experience

To overflow is to possess more than enough. It describes a life so richly empowered by God that His blessings extend beyond our own needs to become a blessing to others.

David declared, “My cup runneth over” (Psalm 23:5). His confidence rested not in possessions but in the Shepherd Himself. The Shepherd is sufficient, therefore the supply is ever-abundant.

Throughout Scripture, God continually demonstrates this abundance. He filled creation with life, supplied manna in the wilderness, brought water from the rock, multiplied the widow’s oil, and fed thousands with five loaves and two fish. His supply always exceeds human limitations.

Overflow is far more than financial increase or material prosperity. It embraces the fullness of God’s gracious provision—spiritual vitality, abiding peace, steadfast joy, wisdom, strength, fruitful service, and every good gift necessary for life and godliness according to His purpose.

While God graciously supplies material needs, the richest dimensions of His overflow are found in lives filled with Christ and poured out in service to others. He does not merely fill empty vessels; He delights in making them overflow. 

Christ is the source of the overflow, the Holy Spirit is the power of the overflow, and serving others is the purpose of the overflow.

A Table in the Presence of Our Enemies

One remarkable truth in Psalm 23 is that our cups can still overflow even in the presence of enemies.

God does not always remove every battle before He blesses His people. Rather, He often demonstrates His faithfulness in the midst of adversity. While opposition remains, He prepares a table. While pressures continue, He anoints our heads with oil. While the enemy watches, our cups overflow.

Our confidence therefore rests not in favourable circumstances but in the Shepherd’s abiding presence. Peace is not the absence of conflict but the presence of Christ.

Keys to Living in the Overflow

1. Hunger for God

Every fresh move of God begins with spiritual hunger.

Jesus declared, “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness … they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6). Likewise, He cried, “If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink” (John 7:37–38).

God fills those who sincerely desire Him. Overflow begins with a heart that longs for His presence above everything else.

2. Walk in Obedience

God’s blessings are closely connected with obedience.

Deuteronomy 28 teaches that diligent obedience positions God’s people for covenant blessings. Sin interrupts fellowship with God and hinders the enjoyment of His best. Overflow is experienced as we walk in humble submission to His Word.

3. Work Diligently

God ordinarily blesses the work of diligent hands: “Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings” (Proverbs 22:29).

Prayer never replaces responsibility. Faith trusts God completely while labouring faithfully with excellence, integrity, and discipline.

4. Live Generously

One of the clearest evidences of an overflowing life is generosity.

The little boy who surrendered his five loaves and two fish placed his small provision into the hands of Jesus, and it became sufficient to feed thousands.

Likewise, Scripture teaches that those who sow generously will also reap generously (2 Corinthians 9:6–11). God blesses His people not merely to increase their possessions but to enlarge their usefulness. We are blessed to become a blessing.

5. Be Prayerful

Prayer deepens our fellowship with God, aligns us with His purposes, and opens our hearts to receive His divine supply.

Prayer is also one of God’s appointed means for confronting every form of spiritual barrenness, limitation, and lack. Through fervent, believing prayer, we cooperate with God’s purposes and receive grace for victorious living.

6. Exercise Faith

God’s promises become our experience through faith.

Rather than speaking continually about our limitations, we must fill our hearts and mouths with God’s Word. Faith looks beyond present circumstances and confidently embraces God’s unfailing promises.

The woman who was bent over for eighteen years, Naaman the leper, and countless others experienced transformation because they believed God’s Word. Our God still specializes in impossible situations.

7. Depend Continually Upon the Holy Spirit

David declared, “Thou anointest my head with oil.” The anointing of the Holy Spirit empowers believers to accomplish what human strength cannot achieve. Fresh challenges require fresh dependence upon God. Yesterday’s victories cannot substitute for today’s communion with the Holy Spirit.

As we walk closely with Him, He grants wisdom, direction, courage, discernment, and spiritual vitality. His anointing reminds us that we belong to God, are sustained by His grace, and are equipped for every assignment He entrusts to us.

When the Holy Spirit fills a life, He enables that believer to overcome obstacles, fulfill divine purpose, and become a channel through whom God’s blessings flow to others.

The Overflow Is Meant to Bless Others

God never intended His blessings to terminate with us. Just as rivers continually flow, so His blessings are designed to flow through our lives into the lives of others. We are comforted to comfort, forgiven to forgive, strengthened to strengthen, and blessed to bless.

The supreme example is God Himself: “For God so loved the world, that he gave…” (John 3:16). The overflowing life is therefore not centred upon self-indulgence but upon faithful stewardship. God entrusts abundance to those whose hearts remain available for His purposes.

Conclusion

The Shepherd still prepares tables in the presence of enemies. He still anoints His people with fresh oil. He still causes cups to overflow. Therefore, refuse to live beneath your covenant inheritance. 

Renew your mind with God’s Word. Walk in obedience. Labour diligently. Pray fervently. Live generously. Exercise unwavering faith, and depend continually upon the Holy Spirit.

Above all, remember that God’s greatest desire is not merely that you possess overflowing blessings, but that you become an overflowing blessing to your generation.

May every dry place in your life become a flowing river. May every barren season give way to supernatural fruitfulness. May the Lord enlarge your capacity, multiply His grace upon your life, and cause your cup to overflow with His goodness, mercy, and power.
