Overcoming satanic resistance

Overcoming satanic resistance

Rhema Christian Church

And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? ~ Zechariah 3:1-2.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you ~ James 4:7.

Introduction

Satanic resistance is real. It seeks to delay, frustrate, and derail God’s purpose in a person’s life. Over the ages, many people who should have advanced much further in life, considering the grace they have received and the opportunities opened to them, have had their progress hindered by spiritual opposition.

However, the believer in Christ Jesus must never treat demonic resistance as final. The devil may oppose, but he cannot ultimately prevail against a life that is yielded to God, clothed in righteousness, and armed with His Word.

To overcome such resistance, one must first understand its nature, respond with spiritual discernment and enforce victory in the name of the Lord.

This is your life, and you must not permit any force of darkness to overrule your destiny. God’s command remains clear: “Speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward” (Exodus 14:15). Therefore, resistance must be confronted, not feared—overcome, not accommodated.

The Nature of Satanic Resistance

To resist means to oppose progress, block advancement, and undermine effort. Thus, satanic resistance is the spiritual force behind stagnation, frustration, and repeated setbacks.

Many promising ventures have collapsed mysteriously. Some marriages that began with joy later broke down. Some bright destinies were interrupted by strange afflictions, confusion, fear, or unexplainable losses. In many cases, such patterns are traceable to demonic resistance.

In Zechariah 3:1–7, the prophet gives us a vivid picture of this reality. Joshua the high priest stood before the angel of the Lord, and Satan stood at his right hand to resist him. This shows that spiritual resistance does not necessarily come because a person lacks commitment to a divine calling or destiny. Joshua was a high priest, yet he was resisted.

Satan resists because that is his nature. He is the adversary, the opposer, and the accuser of the brethren (Revelation 12:10).

He often targets the “right hand”—the place of strength, advantage, productivity, capability and covenant relationship. Thus, demonic resistance frequently attacks areas such as marriage, health, finances, the mind, and spiritual fervency.

The Grounds of Satanic Resistance

In Joshua’s case, the filthy garments were the ground of his accusation. Satan exploited what was wrong in order to resist what God intended.

This teaches an important lesson: while the devil is the adversary, we must also examine ourselves. We should not blame Satan for everything without first asking whether anything in our lives is giving him ground.

These “filthy garments” may include obvious sin, but they may also include attitudes and dispositions that weaken spiritual authority, erode advantages and open doors to spiritual resistance.

Such things include unbelief, prayerlessness, wrong confession, laziness, bitterness, unforgiveness, unfriendliness, envy, negative associations, failure mentality, weak character, and more talk than action.

Some of these are but straws to which Satan clings. Oftentimes, the enemies within open the door to the enemies without. Therefore, overcoming satanic resistance requires both spiritual warfare and honest self-examination.

The Results of Satanic Resistance

Where satanic resistance is not confronted, its results become evident: stagnation, confusion, frustration, retrogression, unfulfilled dreams, and in severe cases, destruction and death.

These outcomes are never God’s best for His children. They should instead awaken holy determination in us to rise, confront the works of darkness, and reclaim our ground in Christ.

How to Overcome Satanic Resistance

1. Stand in Righteousness

Righteousness silences accusation. In Zechariah 3, Joshua’s garments had to be changed before he could stand properly in his office. Likewise, the believer must walk in the light of God’s Word and refuse both sin and spiritual carelessness. “The people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits” (Daniel 11:32).

2. Engage the Power of Sacrifice and Consecration

Psalm 50:5 says, “Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.” There is power in a consecrated life. Satan cannot easily overcome a believer who is wholly yielded to God and serious about covenant living.

3. Resist the Devil in Prayer

Prayer is not optional in spiritual warfare. Scripture says, “Whom resist stedfast in the faith” (1 Peter 5:9). We must pray the Word, rebuke the devil in the name of the Lord, and stand firm in faith. God helps us, but He does not do so without our cooperation.

The command is not to sit down and lament, but to fight the good fight of faith (1 Timothy 6:12).

4. Speak the Word Boldly

The devil does not respect self-pity, silence, or fear. He respects the authority of God’s Word spoken in faith.

Your sound is crucial to your signs. In Genesis 1, God said, and then God saw. What you say affects what you see. Jesus declared, “If ye have faith… ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove….” (Matthew 17:20). Victory often begins with right speaking.

The believer must therefore reject wrong confession. Speak the Word over your life, your home, your mind, and your destiny. God told Moses, “I will be with thy mouth”(Exodus 4:12). When you speak God’s Word, you engage God’s will.

5. Go Forward in Faith

Exodus 14:15 is still God’s answer to many believers: “Go forward.” Do not allow resistance to paralyze you. Refuse to be intimidated by delay, disappointment, or fierce opposition. Move in obedience. Act in faith. Press on in Christ.

Conclusion

Satanic resistance is real, but it is not invincible. The devil may oppose, but the believer has been given authority in Christ to overcome.

If there are filthy garments, let them be removed. If there are wrong attitudes, let them be corrected. If there is silence, let the Word of God arise in your mouth. If there is fear, let faith take its place.

The Lord rebuked Satan on Joshua’s behalf, clothed him afresh, and restored him to service. He is still doing the same for His people today. Therefore, stand in righteousness. Pray with authority. Speak the Word boldly. Reject passivity. Go forward in faith.

Every demonic resistance against your destiny shall break. Every force of delay, disappointment, and stagnation shall lose its hold. And by the power of the Lord Jesus Christ, you shall advance into all that God has ordained for you. You won’t miss it, in Jesus name. Amen. Happy Sunday!
