The centrality of God’s unfathomable love at Christmas

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends ~ John 15:13.

Introduction

Compliments of this beautiful Advent season, and welcome to a new December of remarkable joy, peace, and supernatural empowerment.

I pray that the abundance of God’s grace will continue to flow into your life in every dimension, and that you will enter into higher measures of divine fruitfulness, in Jesus’ name (2 Corinthians 9:10).

As this outgoing year steadily draws to a close, may the Lord stretch forth over you His strong arms of power, mercy, and love. May He crown it with goodness, and cause even the hard pathways of your life to overflow with abundant accomplishments for you and your household, in Jesus’ name.

Evil shall not locate your dwelling. Indeed, in this glorious season, the One who is called Wonderful shall make you a wonder to many, in Jesus’ name (Psalm 71:7). Amen.

This Season and the Centrality of Divine Love

Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, our Saviour, over two thousand years ago in the humble town of Bethlehem of Judea. On that sacred night, the destiny of humanity changed forever, as love and hope took on human form and lay wrapped in swaddling clothes in a manger. No wonder Charles Spurgeon rightly observed: “The greatest and most momentous fact which the history of the world records is the fact of Christ’s birth.”

Unfortunately, in our time, it is easy to become distracted by the externalities of Christmas—the familiar carols, dazzling lights, elegant attire, festive displays, and beautifully wrapped gifts. While these lend colour to the season, Christmas is infinitely more than outward celebration.

At its core, Christmas reveals the giving heart of our Father-God, from whom “every good and perfect gift” proceeds (James 1:17). The greatest of all His gifts is Jesus Christ—our life, our hope, our victory, our salvation, and our full redemption (Isaiah 9:6; John 3:16). Christmas, therefore, is a celebration of divine love expressed in its purest and most sacrificial form.

The Dynamics of God’s Unfathomable Love in Christ Jesus

God’s love, as revealed in Christ, is marked by deep compassion for the totality of human need—spiritual, emotional, and physical (3 John 2). It is the highest expression of love known to heaven and earth. Jesus Himself defined it when He said, “Greater love hath no man than this…” (John 15:13).

I rejoice personally in this love, for it has been my lived experience since the 4th of April, 1977, when I encountered Christ and was born again by His grace and mercy. To God alone be all the glory!

This divine love is sacrificial in every sense. Scripture declares: “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 John 4:10). God’s love is not mere sentiment; it is love proven by action.

It was embodied in the Incarnation, displayed throughout Christ’s earthly ministry, and ultimately demonstrated at the Cross of Calvary. Christmas, therefore, is not merely a remembrance of history; it is the proclamation of God’s love made visible.

Meanwhile, the price of redeeming sinful humanity is immeasurable (Mark 8:36). No earthly wealth can purchase a soul, for redemption costs more than all the riches of the world combined (Psalm 49:6–12). Indeed, the price of God’s love for humanity is incalculable, and Jesus Christ Himself was the ransom paid.

God’s love is His redeeming currency, purchasing our freedom and securing our full redemption (Galatians 3:13–14). It is limitless, sacrificial, steadfast, inclusive, patient, relentless, and unfailing. It protects, perseveres, and endures forever (1 Corinthians 13:4–8).

Christmas, therefore, is not only about the birth of Jesus long ago; it is also about our own rebirth and growth in Christ when we receive Him into our hearts and accept His gift of salvation. As Scripture declares: “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God”(1 John 3:1).

Notwithstanding, this love must be personally embraced in order to be fully enjoyed. As believers, we must keep the flame of this redeeming love—revealed in Christ’s coming—burning continually in our hearts. We must remain open and responsive to the love of Jesus, who was born to redeem us.

God desires that we grow in His love, remain established in it, and express it as we engage the world—especially through the Gospel. Until divine love matures and abides in the heart, life often remains a struggle. But where love reigns, grace flows freely.

Living Out the Love of Christ

Christians are called to be the light of the world and the salt of the earth. Wherever we go, we are to touch lives with the transforming power of the Gospel. Yet this can only occur within the atmosphere of genuine love—the very love Christ embodies.

Something within the heart must say, “I care.”For without love, nothing truly matters. As Scripture affirms, love is supreme (1 Corinthians 13:1–4).

When Jesus was asked about the greatest commandment, He answered simply: to love the Lord with all one’s heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love one’s neighbour as oneself (Matthew 22:37–39).

Hypocrisy cannot sustain divine love, for God’s love is not a set of rules but the disposition of a regenerated heart. Those filled with God’s love find themselves empowered—even compelled—to love others, including their enemies.

Conclusion

Beloved, in this season, the Lord is preparing you for advancement through visible manifestations of His goodness and abundant provision (Psalm 65:11). Fertility and beauty shall gently rest upon you as He distills grace and glory upon your life.

Have you fully embraced this great redeeming love of God? If not, I urge you to do so without delay. Open your heart to the love revealed in Christ, and you will begin to enjoy the peace, hope, and assurance it brings.

May this Christmas season renew your understanding of God’s unfailing love and deepen your walk in His grace. Happy Sunday, and Merry Christmas season!
