Understanding the believers' authority in Christ

“All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth” — Matthew 28:18.

“Behold, I give unto you power… over all the power of the enemy” — Luke 10:19.

INTRODUCTION

One of the greatest revelations a Christian can receive is the understanding of their true identity, spiritual position, and authority in Christ. Many believers sincerely love God but live intimidated by fear, insufficiency, sickness, adverse circumstances, and spiritual opposition because they have not fully understood what Christ accomplished through redemption.

At Calvary, Jesus triumphantly declared, “It is finished” (John 19:30). Through His death and resurrection, He spoiled principalities and powers, triumphing over them through the Cross (Colossians 2:15).

Consequently, believers are not redeemed merely to withstand spiritual assaults or enjoy earthly blessings, but to reign in life, exercise Kingdom authority, resist the devil, deliver the oppressed, advance God’s Kingdom, and manifest Christ’s victorious reign upon the earth. Our authority exists because we are in Christ, and Christ is Lord over all.

The Foundation of Our Authority in Christ

Authority is the legitimate right to command, act, or exercise jurisdiction, while power is the ability or might to enforce that authority (Luke 9:1-6).

When Jesus was asked, “By what authority doest thou these things?” (Matthew 21:23), the question concerned His right to act.

To understand this authority, we must first appreciate Christ’s exalted position. God raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand, “Far above all principality, and power … and every name that is named” (Ephesians 1:20–22).

Jesus Christ reigns supreme: no principality, demonic power, or earthly authority can rival the sovereignty of the risen Lord (Revelation 19:16). Remarkably, Scripture further declares that God “hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:6).

We are spiritually united with the victorious Christ and share in the privileges of His exalted position (Romans 8:37). Our authority to command and exercise spiritual dominion flows from His supremacy, and our victory is inseparable from Him (Luke 10:19). The believer’s authority is therefore delegated, rooted in our union with Christ, and exercised in the power of His Name.

Understanding this truth transforms our spiritual consciousness. We cease approaching darkness as helpless victims struggling for survival and begin standing as redeemed representatives of the victorious King.

Calvary, the Name of Jesus, and the Power of the Holy Spirit

The Cross fundamentally changed the believer’s spiritual position. Through His death, Christ defeated the devil’s dominion and delivered those who were held in bondage through the fear of death (Hebrews 2:14–15).

The blood of Jesus establishes our redemption, while our testimony affirms the victory Christ has accomplished (Revelation 12:11). The decisive victory of Christ on Calvary’s tree is already won, our responsibility is to stand upon that victory through faith, obedience, and steadfast resistance against the enemy (James 4:7).

The Name of Jesus is central to exercising this authority. When the seventy disciples returned from their mission, they rejoiced, saying, “Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name” (Luke 10:17). Indeed, God has highly exalted Jesus and given Him a Name above every name (Philippians 2:9–11).

The authority is not in the volume of our voices, the prominence of our titles, or the strength of our personalities. It is in the supremacy of the Name we represent.

Nevertheless, this authority and Holy Ghost power must work together. Jesus instructed His disciples to wait until they were “endued with power from on high” (Luke 24:49). He subsequently promised, “Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you” (Acts 1:8).

The Holy Spirit empowers believers to witness boldly, proclaim the Gospel, minister healing, confront demonic oppression, enforce Christ’s authority and demonstrate the reality of God’s Kingdom. The authority is Christ’s, the enabling power is the Holy Spirit’s, and the glory belongs entirely to God.

Exercising Authority Through Faith and Dominion Consciousness

Possessing authority and exercising it are not the same. Every believer possesses tremendous spiritual privileges, yet many experience little of their practical benefits because revelation has not sufficiently translated into faith and corresponding action.

Faith takes God at His Word and acts accordingly. Our strength is not in ourselves but in the Lord whose victory we represent (Ephesians 6:10). When spiritual opposition arises, believers must not surrender automatically to fear.

We must pray with confidence, speak God’s Word, resist the devil, reject condemnation, minister to the oppressed, and refuse to allow darkness to silence our Kingdom witness.

Dominion was central to God’s original purpose for humanity (Genesis 1:26). Although sin distorted humanity’s relationship with God, redemption in Christ restores believers to a glorious position of Kingdom life and responsibility.

Scripture declares that those who receive the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness “shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:17). This is the foundation of authentic dominion consciousness. It awakens a living awareness of our identity, privileges, and responsibilities in Christ.

Furthermore, Christ does not merely exercise authority from heaven while leaving His people spiritually disconnected from Him. The King Himself dwells within every believer. Therefore, when opposition arises against your life, family, ministry, career, or divine assignment, remember whose you are, where you are seated in Christ, whose Name you bear, whose Spirit dwells within you, and whose victory guarantees your triumph.

The King lives within you (Colossians 1:27). Let His presence shape your consciousness, His Word govern your declarations, and His authority find expression through your life.

Kingdom Authority Must Serve Kingdom Purpose

Spiritual authority was never intended for personal aggrandizement, manipulation, intimidation, or the pursuit of selfish ambitions. Jesus rebuked His disciples when they proposed calling down fire upon those who rejected Him (Luke 9:54–56). Kingdom authority must advance Kingdom purposes.

Jesus declared, “As my Father hath sent me, even so send I you” (John 20:21). Likewise, we have been divinely commissioned and empowered to continue His works. Our authority must therefore find practical expression in proclaiming Christ, advancing His Gospel, delivering the oppressed, strengthening believers, confronting the powers of darkness, and demonstrating God’s love and righteousness.

The greatest evidence of spiritual authority is not religious display but a life through which the supremacy, character, and power of Jesus Christ are made manifest.

Conclusion

Beloved, Christ did not leave His Church defenseless. He gave us His Word, His Name, His Spirit, and a glorious position in Himself. We are not helpless spectators in the conflict between light and darkness; we are redeemed representatives of the victorious King. Therefore, we must arise and reign in Christ’s victory.

As a believer, you are in Christ, and Christ dwells in you. The Holy Ghost resides within you, the precious Name of Jesus is upon your lips, and the victory of Calvary is your eternal inheritance. Never magnify the enemy above the Lord who defeated him, nor surrender through ignorance the victory Christ secured through His precious blood.

I declare, in the mighty Name of Jesus Christ, that your faith shall rise, and your consciousness of Christ’s indwelling presence shall become stronger than every consciousness of fear or defeat!

Every power of darkness resisting your spiritual authority shall bow before the superior authority of Jesus Christ. You shall walk in dominion over fear, sin, and satanic oppression, and fulfill your divine assignment with boldness and power!

Know your authority in Christ. Believe it. Walk in it. Exercise it boldly! Reign victoriously in life through Jesus Christ, and let the supremacy of the King be gloriously manifested through you! You won’t miss it, in Jesus’ Name. Amen. Happy Sunday!
